Olympic cyclist Chloé Dygert is a cheater – when it comes to her diet.
Cookies and bagels are her weakness, she tells Time magazine. On Sundays when Crumbl Cookies puts out their weekly menu, she’s in for the chocolate chip cookies. But the gourmet cookie chain’s Everything Bagel has in the past completely melted her resistance. “That was probably my favorite,” she said.
Kidding aside – and Dygert admits that junk food isn’t a perfect diet for a cyclist – she pays attention to fueling for a race.
Competing in both track and road cycling events, Dygert, a member of women’s cycling team Canyon-Sram told the magazine that she will likely stick to her routine of muesli reinforced with almond milk, honeycrisp or pink lady apples and Chobani Greek yogurt for breakfast.
Dygert loads on the carbs, typically having a Mexican bowl at lunch and sometimes a whole pizza at dinner. An evening snack is plain yogurt with granola. The night before a hard workout, she downs four cookies or 10 Starbucks cake pops. On training days, she carries snacks like fig bars or energy gels.
On race days, the team schedules breakfast three hours before competition. A sugary drink after the race helps promote recovery.
It’s no surprise the varied cuisine of the Olympic Village is entitle to a foodie such as Dygert. She tells Time. “What I feel best on is Mexican and Italian – pizza and rice bowls.”
“I’m excited to be selected for my third Olympic Games,” Dygert says. “Looking back at Rio in 2016, I took everything for granted. I remember Rio better than Tokyo because I was happier and healthier.”
In 2020, Dygert suffered a horrific crash in the World Championships in Italy. “I respected and felt so much more grateful for being able to go to Tokyo after my accident. I realized and understood better that being selected for the Olympics is such an accomplishment and that it’s such a massive dream for everyone.”
