Cycling chef’s recipes fill jersey pockets with flavor

Jun 10, 2024 | Books | 0 comments

If you’re tired of fueling with rice and carrying processed energy bars and other standard cycling fare on your rides, Alan Murchison’s latest book, The Cycling Chef: On the Go. Ride Day Recipes to Fuel Up, Replenish and Restorewill make variety the spice of your road work.

Murchison, a Michelin-starred chef with more than 25 years of restaurant experience, has combined his love of food with extensive cycling experience as a national-level master’s cyclist, international endurance runner and multiple world and European age-group duathlon championship wins.

Once the hunger knock hits, it’s too late to fuel. The recipes in Murchison’s book ensures that cyclists stay energized and recover well. Murchison, whose previous books focus on recipes for getting lean and for performance and pleasure, is careful in On the Go to make the recipes for snacks, unique dishes and smoothies simple for time-poor cyclists to prepare.

Hard rides deserve flavorful snacks

Murchison even pays homage to Greg LeMond’s tragic hunting accident that derailed his cycling career for a time. The main ingredient in the recipe for Greg’s Revenge Sausage Roll is, guess what? Turkey.

The recipes are based largely around meals Murchison developed as a performance chef for leading teams and elite riders around the world, the author explains in the books. “Fuel management is just as important as your clothing,” he says of cyclists who meticulously plan their ride-day kit, “and time spent planning your on-the-bike sustenance will not be wasted.”

The book is beautifully illustrated with color photos that accompany the recipes and the throw-back black-and-white photos of cycling in the days when hard men struggled up dusty mountain roads in the Tour de France and gladly accepted a showering of water from a hose aimed by a cycling fan at the roadside.

Eat well and ride hard. That’s the message from The Cycling Chef.
